From sandy beaches to magnificent castles
Scania, in Swedish called Skåne, is the southernmost region in Sweden. The name Skåne is used for both the province and county. The location of Scania makes it a great destination coming from abroad. Depending on where you want to stay in Scania there are several airports to choose from. If you are staying in the southern parts, you can also arrive at Copenhagen airport and then take the Öresund bridge to Sweden. And yes, it is The Bridge known from the TV-series.
As mentioned, this region offers you a magnificent variety. Driving through the flat landscape often gives you great panoramic views where the yellow rape fields are typical for the region. If you are staying near the ocean, you’ll find yourself many times close to a beach. The region has more than 50 km of beach where Sandhammaren is one of the most famous.
If you rather prefer cultural experiences, the southern parts of Sweden has an astonishing range of castles. Some dating all the way back to the 11th century. Examples of famous castles in the region are Sofiero, Glimmingehus and Lund Cathedral.
Cities in Scania to visit
Even though a lot of the holiday cottages in Sweden are located in the countryside, many visitors do want to experience the city life during a daytrip or two. In Scania, you will find both small and larger cities and towns to visit. The most famous is perhaps the third biggest city in Sweden – Malmö. This vibrant city offers everything from quality shopping to great restaurants and bars. The second largest city in the region is Helsingborg which is followed by the medieval Lund.
There are of course also smaller cities in the region which each has its own offer to their visitors. Examples are Ystad, Kristianstad, Örkelljunga and Simrishamn.
The authentic Österlen
The beautiful Österlen has grown into one of the most popular tourist areas in Sweden. Its special atmosphere attracts also artists and writers which reflects in the culture this area has to offer. Also the food culture is strong here and a lot of local delicacies are found throughout the area. Visit local farm shops at the countryside or take a tour to the famous apple plantations. It is not by accident that Österlen is called The Apple Kingdom.
Its variety and romantic scenery makes Österlen not only a summer destination but also well-visited during other parts of the year. Österlen is located in the southeastern parts of Scania Other attractions in Österlen includes the rock monument Ale’s Stones (Ale Stenar), the picturesque village of Kivik and the national park Stenshuvud. The latter does not only offer hiking trails in rich green forest but also sandy beach and – from the top – a magnificent panoramic view over the Baltic Sea.
