History and monuments
The first mention of the island comes from the end of the 11th century, however, objects have been found during archaeological excavations that show Ilovik was inhabited much earlier. In the 11th century a Benedictine monastery was built, where a defensive tower was built in the 16th century to protect the island's inhabitants against pirates. At the bottom of the sea near the island lies the wreck of a sunken ship, as well as artefacts from the Roman period. Ilovik was originally called Tovarnjak.
